There’s a new jailbreak out. I will have a tutorial in a couple hours!
Untethered Jailbreak for iPhone 4s and iPad 2 Releasing Next Week
The iOS community got a belated present two days after Christmas with the release of the untethered jailbreak for all A4 devices running iOS 5.0.1. The release of the jailbreak represented nearly two months of hard work and research by pod2g followed by efficient and swift work from the iPhone Dev and Chronic Dev Teams to package the jailbreak up for public consumption.
In the aftermath of the A4 jailbreak, pod2g released a very well written and informative blog post explaining the details behind what they have dubbed ‘Corona’. Without wanting to go into to much detail about the post (follow the link and read it) it basically covers the problems encountered whilst trying to execute unsigned binaries and other issues they came across during the development.
Skip forward to the present day, and pod2g has been letting his fingers do the talking again with his most recent tweet announcing that he has made progress on the A5 jailbreak development and expects to see a jailbreak release within a week. That’s right kids, your beautiful iPhone 4S and iPad 2 could soon be set free to enjoy all of the jailbreaking goodness that Cydia and the jailbreak community has to offer.
Obviously, this is in no way a guarantee, it is merely an update on the situation and an initial time estimation. As long as the rest of the process goes to plan, and testing proves fruitful then hopefully we shouldn’t see any show stopping problems which delay the release. However, if any unforeseen problems do occur, I have confidence in the collaboration between the development teams to be able to overcome the issues promptly.
A Tweet from Chronic Dev Team member p0sixninja four days ago alerted Jailbreakers to the fact that they should upgrade their devices to iOS 5.0.1 while they still can – and yes, that did mean A5 devices but excluding individuals who rely on a software unlock.
If you are one of the many waiting for an A5 untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 then buckle your seat belts and prepare for seven days of updates and updates, hopefully ending in delight. I’m pretty sure that the developers who have been producing tweaks for iOS 5 and Siri are ready to welcome the new batch of jailbroken devices to their list of potential customers.
Stay tuned and subscribe to my YouTube channel and I will post a jailbreak video/tutorial for this when it is released.
Possible Leaked Picture of iPad 3 Retina Display Surfaces
With the expected release of the iPad 3 just around the corner, rumors of Apple’s next big product have been flying around faster than ever. Because of the huge volume of these rumors, little of them are presented with little more than speculation to go on. However, today we have a rumor that comes with some photographic evidence to go with it.
Earlier today, pictures surfaced on a Korean forum that supposedly depict the display of the iPad 3, which, according to this post, will be a retina display. The photograph, shown below, depicts the new iPad 3 display, along with the iPad 2 display for comparison.
On top is the current iPad 2 display, with the iPad 3 on bottom. Pictures from iFixIt confirm that the top display matches the iPad 2′s. The iPad 3′s display looks very similar, and is the same size (9.7 inches), with the main difference being that there are three ribbon connectors going into the screen rather than two on the iPad 2. A retina display would need to transmit more information, which would mean there would have to be more wires going into the screen, so this supports the claim that this is a legit display. As usual, however, there is no way to tell if this rumor is true until release day, but it does add some weight to the suspicion that Apple will double the iPad’s resolution, as the have done with the iPhone and iPod Touch.
Apple reportedly still mulling iTV chip manufacturer, late 2012 launch again rumored
Following reports regarding the “iTV” that Apple’s suppliers are prepping an HDTV in 32-inch and 37-inch variants for a summer 2012 launch, a new report from DigiTimes today suggested Apple will use its own custom chips, similar to the A5 chips found in iPhone 4S and iPad 2.
According to the report, three manufacturers are currently bidding to win contracts to provide components for Apple’s smart TV including: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Siliconware Precision Industries, and Advanced Semiconductor Engineering.
There were originally reports in July that TSMC signed a foundry agreement with Apple to begin testing next-generation A6 chips using its 28-nanometer process and 3D stacking technologies. That was followed by reports in October that Samsung began production of an A6 chip at its Texas factory. The A6 chip is expected to appear in next-gen iOS devices.
Apple’s longtime manufacturing partner Foxconn Electronics is expected to win contracts for the assembly of the Apple HDTV. The report also mentions that Apple plans to complete hardware standards for the device by Q2 in 2012. Apple will apparently deal directly with contract manufacturers to provide components, much the same as the iPhone and iPad.
Yesterday’s report claimed that Samsung would be providing chips for an Apple branded HDTV, along with Sharp supplying displays. Today’s report also confirmed a late 2012 launch.
Stern Agee’s Shaw Wu backs up the reports and claims Apple should pursue a “disruptive” internet streaming model to rival traditional cable providers and subscriptions, despite the licensing hurdles. He also wrote that Apple should continue its Apple TV set-top box product line, something that also backs up the DigiTimes report from yesterday:
Frankly, We Think AAPL Should Enter TV Space. Frankly, we are not surprised and believe AAPL should enter the TV space as this is arguably the only major end market the company is not currently participating in a bigger way. Moreover, we have picked up several data points indicating activity from component makers to manufacturing partners as well as AAPL’s own patent filings from at least 2005. So far, there is the current Apple TV set-top box appliance which launched in January.
Samsung to supply A6 processors for next iPhone as chairman dispatches heir apparent for talks with Tim Cook?
In spite of its ongoing litigation with Apple, Samsung is allegedly ramping up production of the Apple-designed quad-core A6 chips in its manufacturing plant in Austin, Texas, which opened in 2007. The claim is attributed to industry sources privy to the both companies’ plans, who told Korea Times Monday:
Apple has been in talks with Samsung over shipment of its A6 quad-core mobile processor (AP) chips to be used in the next iPhone. It appears that Apple clearly has concluded that Samsung remains a critical business partner. [...] Samsung Electronics will apply its advanced 28-nanometer processing technology to produce qualified A6 mobile APs. TSMC will provide customized chips with designs from Apple, however, the volume will be very small.
This comes on the heels of the latest news that Samsung was “counter-attacking Apple again” and seeking to stop iPhone 4S sales in Australia and Japan following Apple scoring a ban on the sale of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia last week. Apple’s entire business with Samsung which also inolves NAND chips, SSDs and more is said to be worth an estimated $8 billion in parts this year alone, roughly five percent of Samsung’s entire revenue. This makes Apple Samsung’s biggest overseas client.
TSMC hasn’t yet stabilized the manufacturing process and “Apple isn’t taking risks”, the source noted. EETimes first reported back in March that Apple had shifted production of the then unreleased A5 chip for iPad 2 from Samsung to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which failed to materialize at the time. The report asserted the two companies had entered into a foundry relationship (here and here). Reuters followed up in July, writing TSMC began a test production run of A6 chips on its newest 28-nanometer process and 3D stacking technologies, corroborated by the Taiwan Economic Times.
Switching your silicon provider is anything but easy. The process often takes years to complete, meaning it makes sense for Apple to continue sourcing in-house designed processors for iOS devices from Samsung – until TSMC is ready to take over. At the same time, Samsung is sending a clear message that it will not be entering a broad cross-licensing agreement with Apple. Recent legal setbacks will not discourage the Korean consumer electronics maker in its pursuit to fight Apple in courts all over the world. Per another Korea Times article quoting a high-ranking Samsung executive which asked not to be identified, Samsung “don’t see any signs of entering a comprehensive cross-licensing deal with Apple”:
We don’t think we were losing our grip. The recent decisions by courts in Europe weren’t favorable. But we are still positive that we will win eventually. The bottom line is that our legal team has reached a consensus to beat Apple at the appeals courts. We are in for the long-haul.
Interesting enough, this Samsung person also gave the publication a name of a high-ranked Samsung executive to blame should Samsung’s legal spat with Apple take a turn for the worse:
Samsung chief executive Choi Gee-sung will take full responsibility of the ongoing legal issue.
The two companies may, however, could already be at work behind the scenes on a possible resolution because a Samsung spokesman told the paper that Samsung’s chief operating officer Lee Jae-yong (son of Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Kun-hee and heir apparent to the group’s leadership) was planning on meeting Apple CEO Tim Cook after being invited to a private memorial service held for Apple co-founder Steve Jobs yesterday at Stanford University. Another source called for iPad 3 and iPhone 5 with a slightly bigger four-inch screen sporting the same 960-by-640 pixel resolution Retina Display from LG Display and the “redesigned surface”, with both devices allegedly launching “within the first quarter of next year”. Given the recent iPhone 4S launch, Apple releasing another iPhone model in just a few months would be an unusual move, if not unnecessary. Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Jeffrey Fidacaro also mentions iPad 3 in his recent note to clients. He wrote that Apple commissioned Asian contract manufacturers with building up to one million iPad 3 units in the fourth quarter of this year. Mind you, not that analysts’ quotes matter (they often are wrong in their crystal ball peering) or that Fidacaro has an established record of Apple predictions. As a case study, one needs to look no further than the last week’s note by Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White who boldly predicted a lower-priced tablet from Apple he dubbed iPad mini, allegedly due “in the first few months of 2012″.
Suppliers to Begin Preparing 32″ and 37″ Apple Television Sets in Early 2012?
Digitimes reports that Apple’s suppliers are set to begin preparing materials for the new Apple television set during the first quarter of 2012, with the company reportedly targeting a launch for the second or third quarter of the year. Apple is said to be initially working on 32-inch and 37-inch sizes.
“The supply chain of Apple will start preparing materials for iTV sets in the first quarter of 2012 in order to meet Apple’s schedule to launch the new display products in the second or the third quarter of 2012, according to industry sources. [...]
Media reports in Korea also indicated that Samsung Electronics started producing chips for the iTVs in November 2011, while Sharp will produce the displays for the new TVs.”
While the new television sets will reportedly integrate most if not all of the functionality of the current Apple TV set-top box, sources also indicate that Apple is likely to release an updated standalone Apple TV box next year as well.
While rumors of an Apple television set have been floating around for quite some time, they gained steam several months ago when Steve Jobs was quoted in Walter Isaacson’s authorized biography of him as saying that he had “finally cracked” how to create a revolutionary interface for a television product. Rumors have since suggested that Apple is working on a Siri-enabled television set that would be introduced by 2013.
Apple Fined $1.2 Million in Italy Over Warranty Disclosure Issues
Reuters reports that Apple has been fined the equivalent of $1.2 million in Italy over issues related to warranty disclosures.
According to the report, Italy’s antitrust regulators ruled that Apple has not been providing adequate disclosures about the two free years of product warranty assistance required under Italian law, while also pushing customers to purchase AppleCare extended warranties without disclosing that many of the benefits overlap the standard warranty.
” The authority said Apple Sales International, Apple Italia and Apple Retail Italia did not properly inform customers that they were entitled to two years of free assistance under Italian law. Three Apple spokesmen contacted by Reuters weren’t immediately available for comment.
Information provided about an extra guarantee scheme, the “AppleCare Protection Plan,” encouraged customers to buy the service without clearly explaining that it overlapped with the free assistance required by law, the competition authority said.“
News of Italian regulators’ inquiries into Apple’s warranty offering surfaced in late May. Word on any fines levied on Apple was said to be set to follow by late August, but the agency apparently took some additional time to examine the issue before reaching a decision.
Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 Untethered On iPhone, iPad, iPod touch (A4 Devices) Now Using Redsn0w 0.9.10b1 / Corona
Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 !
…and, in hopes of making your holidays just a bit happier, this morning we are pleased to announce the release of an untethered jailbreak for iOS version 5.0.1, for all supported A4 (& lower) devices! This jailbreak is brought to you courtesy of pod2g’s ninja-like magic + userland exploits, which he first publicly described in this blog post and then turned over to both the Chronic Dev & iPhone Dev teams for further testing + integration into our existing jailbreak tools.
You can quickly access, download & install Corona 5.0.1 Untether (Chronic Dev team’s version, packaged in the Cydia store) for your iPhone 4, iPhone 4 (CDMA), iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, iPod Touch 4G & iPod Touch 3G *CURRENTLY RUNNING iOS 5.0.1* by following the steps below:
- Open the Cydia app on your tethered jailbroken device**
- Search for “Corona”
- Hit the “Install” button (as shown in the screen grab below)
This package will allow your 5.0.1 device to install pod2g’s untethered exploits and reboot without requiring an external tool like redsn0w or sn0wbreeze, and without having to restore your device (so you get to keep all your apps, contacts, etc).
**Note: if you do not currently have access to the Cydia store on your 5.0.1 device, you can use the redsn0w 0.9.10 tool developed by the iPhone Dev team. It is exactly the same set of files as our Cydia package, but bundled with redsn0w for new jailbreak users and/or those who are not already running a tethered jailbreak.
If you have one of the A4 devices listed above and are not using iOS 5.0.1 yet, you can update your iOS version now (though you should not update to 5.0.2 when it is released, or you will lose your jailbreak) or you can wait a few days max for our Corona 5.0 Untether package, which will be available in the Cydia store upon release.
Apologies to those of you iPad 2 & iPhone 4S users who are waiting for an A5 jailbreak; we all (pod2g + everyone here at Chronic Dev) are still working feverishly ‘round the clock to get an untethered jailbreak into your hands as well, just as soon as we possibly can.
If you guys are on 5.0.1 TETHERED then you need to download Corona in Cydia. If you guys want to jailbreak your phone but is not jailbroken currently then you need to restore to 5.0.1 and download Red Sn0w. Here are the links for Red Sn0w:
Legal Siri Port Available For Download (Video)
Fully Legal Siri Port Available for Download Now
Monday, December 26, 2011 136
Just minutes ago, jailbreak tweak developer Chpwn released Spire, the first fully legal and functional Siri port to Cydia. He worked with Ryan Petrich and Steven Troughton-Smith. This is the moment that many people have been waiting for since the release of the iPhone 4S, and up until now there have been very few apps that came close. Even of the ones that did, copyright issues and bandwidth problems led to the early downfall of almost every one. Chpwn tweeted the link to his blog post here which explains all the info one might need to know about the tweak.
The biggest problem with this tweak is that it still requires authorization from an iPhone 4S, so it adds the ability to specify your own proxy server. Chpwn suggests using this SiriProxy fork to set up a server that you can connect Spire to.
Chpwn also warns that the download is about 100 MB, so you should probably connect to WiFi before starting the download. To find the package, just search “Spire” in Cydia.
This tweak isn’t perfect, but it avoids many of the problems that previous Siri ports had, as well as being fully functional as compared to them. Be sure to subscribe to the newsletter below to be notified if there are any major updates to this tweak.
I will upload a tutorial as soon as I can get this done.
